New York\'s huge balloon rises over midtown Manhattan on Thursday for the annual Macy\'s Thanksgiving parade. Spectators lined up on the parade route, and a large number of police officers were watching.
The 89-year parade also included marching bands and floats, with Hello Kitty, Snoopy, Paddington and other giant balloons.
Performers are expected to include Jodin Sparks, Sean Mendes and Pat Benatar.
City officials said there was no known and credible threat to New York after the recent attacks in Paris and videos allegedly made by ISIS containing footage of Times Square.
But Police Chief William Bratton says more than 2,500 police officers will be stationed on the Thanksgiving Day parade route --
The department has the largest number of officials ever assigned to the event.
\"I think people came here from all over the city, from the metropolitan area, from all over the country to participate in the parade, Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a press conference on Wednesday night.
\"We cannot let terrorists succeed in psychological warfare. . . .
Everything they do is to create fear and try to change us.
\"On Wednesday night, thousands of people gathered to watch the large character balloons that became the main content of the parade being inflated.
\"It\'s a season of appreciation, a season of attention to family and all of our loved ones,\" de Blasio said . \".
\"At the same time, however, there are still some people in the world who are trying to provoke fear.
They want us to be scared.
They try to make us change our way of life, change our values, lose our spirit, and lose our values.
We refuse to do so.
